Preakness Horse Betting

The world has been enjoying and betting on the Preakness Stakes for over a century. It’s an American institution that’s held every year on the third Saturday of May. At this year’s race, the tradition of excitement and spontaneity continued when a pair of Hall of Famers managed to pull off a huge upset.

History Of The Preakness Horse Race

The first race was run in 1873, but the seed that would become the Preakness was actually planted two years earlier. That spring, the Pimlico Race Course introduced a stakes race. It was for three year olds and the current governor named the race in honor of a colt named Preakness. That first purse of $2,050 was taken home by John Chamberlain, who was riding Survivor. He won by 10 lengths, at the time the sport’s largest victory margin. That record stayed in place until the 21st Century.

In 1919, the first Triple Crown winner was not even recognized as such because the achievement had no name. Sir Barton swept the Preakness, the Derby and Belmont. He had never won a race before. Unfortunately, the feat and term “Triple Crown” didn’t officially exist until the 1930s.

While Baltimore and the Pimlico would definitely be called the Preakness’ home, there has been occasion when it was held elsewhere. In 1890, the Bronx hosted the event at its Morris Park Racecourse. It would be three years before there would be another race. After, for over a decade, the Preakness was run at the Gravesend Race Track in Brooklyn. It would return to Baltimore at the turn of the 20th Century, where it has stayed since.

The Preakness has been a great source of entertainment and sports throughout its storied history. Its attendance is ranked second, surpassing even the Belmont Stakes. Only the Kentucky Derby beats out the Preakness in popularity.

The 2014 Preakness Stakes Results

Legal horse betting in 2014 means a possible Triple Crown winner. After taking the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, California Chrome needs just the Belmont to make horse racing royalty. However, becoming the 12th Triple Crown winner will be no small task. There will be plenty of fresh horses which did not race at the Preakness, which show up at Belmont, New York on June 7 to challenge California Chrome in his Triple Crown bid. Commanding Curve was a long shot at Kentucky, which pushed late to finish just back of the Derby winner. Ride on Curlin and Social Inclusion also showed respectable odds as the most likely candidates to beat California Chrome at the Preakness Stakes, and accordingly, they finished second and third. All horse racing eyes now focus on Belmont Park, where a full and fast field is predicted. But winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness stakes means 2014 Triple Crown betting is in full effect for California Chrome, who will likely have to get past Kid Cruz, Commanding Curve, Danza, Wicked Strong, Samraat and several other three-year-old thoroughbreds to make history.
